MetaPiano

Winter workshop: Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 2015
Instructors: Floor van de Velde, Seth Avecilla

MetaPiano, a collaborative sound sculpture experiment took place during https://web.mit.edu/iap/ in January 2015. Students with backgrounds ranging from mechanical engineering, physics, music, art, design, architecture, and media arts took part in this year’s course that saw the group deconstruct and reconstruct two upright pianos into a newly imagined sound sculpture.

During this week-long course, students were able to build on pre-existing skills and knowledge while introducing new fabrication skills. They transformed one piano into an electro-acoustic feedback instrument for pianist and vocals. The other soundboard became a pinball machine, which was later installed in the MIT Museum as part of their student works exhibit, where it has become one of the most loved and most interactive pieces.
